My Apple Watch shows the wrong number of unread messages

My apple watch always displays the wrong number of unread (sms) messages. Before there was a workaround by asking Siri on the watch to "read new messages"--and it would clear the count. This no longer seems to work. Siri just spins now for a while and just says "sorry can you say that again".

The only solutions I see online are to reboot the phone and the watch. I have to do this almost every other day and it doesn't even work half the time. Very frustrating.

Any ideas would be appreciated.
