How to access media on Apple TV Offline?

I regard it as very important that I can play my media on my Apple TV device from a local drive attatched to it. Often the Internet at my destination, where I play the TV, is only intermittant or even completly missing.

The Apple TV box is a network streaming device. Its storage is not for content. It doesn’t support a directly attached drive, but instead can support content on the local home network (computers, NAS). Subscription content or iTunes Store purchases do require an internet connection (even if downloaded, for authorization).
