H.264 exports fail (error -17693)

Every time I attempt to export a project in H.264, it fails unless the project is 720p. It doesn't matter if I try 480i or 1080i, it will always fail. Other codecs work fine, but I need to be able to export using H.264 for file size reasons. The error message I get is "The operation could not be completed because an error occurred when encoding frame at 00:00:00:00 (error -17693)." I've tried starting the encoding after 00:00:00:00, but it doesn't help.

I've reinstalled Final Cut, but nothing works. This is a brand-new Mac Studio (M2 Max, 64Gb RAM). Help!

Error -17693 is equivalent to the signed 2's complement hexadecimal number E00002D6, which is defined in the public domain header file IOReturn.h as error name 'kIOReturnTimeout', description = 'I/O Timeout.'

This implies FCP encountered a system-level I/O error when writing to a disk drive. Your Etrecheck report shows one of your drives is a 2TB SanDisk Extreme Pro. Are any of your files for the export task on that drive? There have been widely-reported problems with that drive and also the 2TB Extreme Portable version.

Sandisk has a serial number lookup web page where you can determine if your particular drive is impacted. You can Google that to find it.

The export operation uses the MacOS Video Toolbox framework vigorously, which is called to encode H.264. It is well known that the Chrome Keystone components abuse access to Video Toolbox and can cause other apps to crash or fail. I don't know if Google ever fixed that but it makes sense to remove Chrome and all the Keystone software.

If any of the FCP source, destination, library or cache files are on the 2TB Sandisk drive, relocate the data and try the same test without that drive plugged in. The problems with certain production batches of that Sandisk model can be very severe, and you can lose all your data without warning.

After you eliminate that drive for troubleshooting purposes and remove the Chrome and Keystone software, reset FCP preferences and see if the export problem still happens.

Start by deleting preferences. To delete preferences, hold down command and option while starting the application and click Delete Preferences. The application will start in a default state, and open an "Untitled" library. Reopen the library you were working on, set the preferences the way you like them, and try again.

Also, delete render files. Maybe a stuck render file is causing problems.
