Saved content sporadically not available offline (iPad, Watch)

With no apparent reason or consistency, articles and podcasts saved on my iPad and my Apple Watch occasionally and suddenly become unavailable when I do not have an internet connection - for example, on an airplane or a bike ride. The iPad notice says "Feed Unavailable, Apple News isn't connected to the internet," and the Apple Watch similarly stops the podcast and says I need to be connected to WiFi.

I have studied the Apple Communities and other sites such as Reddit, and I am doing everything exactly as prescribed by Apple. There must be a glitch somewhere, for example in the IOS - otherwise, this cut-off would not happen at all, or would happen with some consistency (which it does not).

From a user perspective, it is frustrating because I enjoy podcasts when biking, and I enjoy reading when flying, and these are becoming unreliable pursuits of ancillary pleasure.

Any suggestions much appreciated - and, Apple execs, if somehow you are monitoring this, it is a real problem, not caused by "failure to save," caused by something else. Thanks for your attention!

There are a few potential reasons and solutions to consider:

1. Storage Space: Ensure that you have sufficient storage space available on your devices to store the saved content. Lack of storage space can sometimes lead to issues with accessing offline content.

2. Syncing Settings: Check the syncing settings for the apps or services where you're saving the content. Make sure that the settings are configured to allow for offline access and that content is being properly synced to your devices.

3. Network Connectivity: While saved content should be available offline, sometimes intermittent network connectivity issues can disrupt access to offline content. Try toggling airplane mode on and off to reset the network connection and see if that resolves the issue.

4. App Updates: Ensure that the apps or services you're using to save content are up to date. Developers often release updates to address bugs and improve offline functionality.

5. Reset Network Settings: On your iPad, you can try resetting network settings by going to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This will reset Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN settings. Note that you'll need to re-enter Wi-Fi passwords after doing this.

6. Contact Apple Support: If the issue persists despite trying the above steps, it may be worth reaching out to Apple Support for further assistance. They can provide more advanced troubleshooting steps and investigate whether there may be a deeper underlying issue with your devices or software.

I hope these suggestions help resolve the issue and allow you to enjoy your podcasts and reading content offline without interruptions.

For the content you want you need an internet connection. Go to Settings/cellular and turn it on, and also turn on the switches for the apps you want to use. This will fix it as long as your mobile service provider has network coverage where you are. It will not help on a plane, because you are required to put your phone in Airplane mode while flying. You would have to subscribe and pay for wi-fi on a plane, the turn on WiFi.

for podcasts you can download them to the podcast app in advance when you have a internet connection.

Heretostay - Thanks so much for taking the time to reply, and so thoroughly.

My problem, however, is intermittent. Most of the time, I can easily access my saved articles and podcasts offline. But once per airplane trip, and once every other bike ride, access is denied "because you are not connected to the internet" (which of course is the whole point of saved content offline!).

I have tried almost every trick in the book, including the ones you mentioned (updates, reset settings, etc.). And I have contacted Apple Support, which has not been helpful or responsive at all. It is amazing that this incredible and large company does not devote some resources to actually listening to real-world customers with actual (although probably small) problems.

The one trick you mentioned which I have not tried is to toggle Airplane Mode on and off when the problem occurs. I will try that next time, thanks.

Thanks again for your help. Maybe someone else will chime in!

Hi Lawrence - Thanks for the reply. But Apple makes offline content available on the iPad and the Watch, with no internet connection required after you "save" the article or podcast. I have been doing that for years. Yes, you have to have internet to download, but then, you can read saved articles and listen to saved podcasts without the internet. It works well, until it doesn't, just all of a sudden, as I said maybe once every hour or so.
