Can the Macbook simply receive (not send) a fax from someone? Do i need to provide a telephone number? Could the fax be sent to me via email?

FAX is a landline based telephone service.

Your MacBook has no connection to the copper wire based telephone system, therefore cannot directly receive or send a FAX transmission.

There are, however, online services that provide FAX send and receive service to computers via an online subscription that your Mac can access, most commonly by means of the web browser.

If you google search for "online fax service" you will be rewarded with a list of numerous such service providers.
