Preview is not exporting to any format

After Sonoma update, preview opens 16-bit gray images but it is not exporting them to any format and is giving error messages (see pictures).

I was expecting them to solve the problem in MacOS14.3 but they did not.

I made a workaround by pasting the images to keynote and exporting from there, but it is really annoying because I have to reopen, rename and crop them back in Preview, when I could just cut and export directly from Preview in past versions.

Why make something simple so complex?

As also suggested by Heretostay59, the first step I would try is resetting the preview preferences.

First attempt, in my case for example ( Sonoma 14.1.2 ), the file is located in:

~/Library/Containers/Preview/Data/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Preview.plist

but also in my case the "go to folder" method doesn't work, so I would do:

1) Go to your Home folder ( the one with documents, music, pictures ecc..)

2) Press CMD + Shift + . -> this will show hidden folders and files

3) Enter the hidden Library folder

4) Open Containers, than locate Preview, then Data, then Library, then Preferences and then locate the com.apple.Preview.plist file

5) Copy that file on the Desktop ( as backup ) and delete it from the folder.

6) Restart the Mac and try to do the operation you were doing again

Let us know if it solved the problem!

Edit: Also, could you tell me what kind of extension the file has?

It seems like you're encountering an issue with Preview after the Sonoma update on macOS 14.2. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the problem:

1. Reset Preview Preferences:

- Sometimes, resetting the preferences of Preview can resolve unexpected behavior. To do this, quit Preview, then navigate to ~/Library/Preferences/ and locate the file named "com.apple.Preview.plist". Move this file to the desktop (this acts as a backup), then restart your Mac and try using Preview again.

2. Update macOS:

- If you're not already on the latest version of macOS, consider updating to macOS 14.3 if it's available. Apple frequently releases updates to address software issues and improve stability.

3. Repair Disk Permissions:

- Use Disk Utility to repair disk permissions on your Mac. Incorrect permissions can sometimes cause issues with applications like Preview. Boot into Recovery Mode, open Disk Utility, select your startup disk, and choose "First Aid" to repair disk permissions.

4. Check File Compatibility:

- Ensure that the images you're trying to export are in a compatible format and meet the requirements of Preview. If possible, try exporting different types of images to see if the issue persists across all formats.

5. Use Alternative Software:

- As a temporary workaround, consider using alternative software for exporting images until the issue with Preview is resolved. There are several third-party image editing applications available that may offer the functionality you need.

6. Contact Apple Support:

- If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it's recommended to contact Apple Support for further assistance. They can provide personalized support and may be able to offer additional troubleshooting steps or escalate the issue if necessary.

I hope one of these solutions helps resolve the problem with Preview on your iMac.

Regards

Dear sicaretta,

that you so much for your time. I followed your directions and found the .plist file and then proceeded as Heretostay59 said. Unfortunately the problem persists. I attach new captures where you can see that the file size that Preview estimates for the export is 0Kb for all formats except for pdf. When I hit "export" the error message comes up. In addition, a "the document could not be saved automatically" rises after a while.

I am starting to believe this is a file compatibility problem, maybe due to the .tif 16-bits greyscale picture or the camera where the pictures are taken. The thing is it was working in previous system versions.

Thanks again.

Dear Heretostay59,

thank you for your help. I have tried your advises, but I could not locate the preference file you indicate. I have also apply first help on my hard disk and everything seem ok. I seems to me that the new Preview has some incompatibility issue with the type of image I am trying to crop and export, since everything seems to work when working with a "Mac-generated" image. I do not understand why, however, Preview opens those images (basically are 16-bit greyscale images taken with a Fujifilm camera) but does not let you work or modify them. In addition, all those error messages giving no clue of what is happening do not help and point to some kind of bug.

Thanks again. I am open to any other suggestion.
