Is my 2009 magic keyboard to old to update firmware?

My magic keyboard will no longer pair to my work laptop, seemingly after a windows update from my work. I read online that the magic keyboard needs a firmware update to correct some security issues with using it over bluetooth connection. I followed the instructions while it was connected via bluetooth to my iMac but couldn't complete it as there was no "i" button next to the keyboard on the screen to press - now I'm wondering if my keyboard is just too ancient? I had no idea it was this old, from 2009!

Just for a bit of clarification, a 2009 Apple keyboard, would be one of their Apple Wireless Keyboards, not any of their Magic Keyboards that came out in 2015.

A 2009 keyboard, would be a 2-battery, 3rd generation model. AFAIK, there are no firmware updates for it ... and, yes, it is likely too old.

As such the article you arrived here from would not be applicable for your keyboard.

i've always thought they were all called "magic keyboard'

a while ago i realized i had the 'wireless keyboard' from apple

on their website archives(?) i found a firmware 1.0 update for the 2009 aluminum keyboard

not only that, there is a 1.1 firmware update for the aluminum keyboard....maybe those aren't wireless (or magic).

finally, there is a 2.0 firmware update to the 'wireless keyboard'.

i've been having problems with connecting/reconnecting/disconnecting so i'm going to give one or all of these a try on my mid 2015 macbook pro with an old-ish wireless keyboard

another thing i've stumbled upon and then went down the rabbit hole was the possible effects of usb 3.0 ports and peripheries creating enough interference for the frequencies used for bluetooth devices

ironically, they did come out with a firmware update for the 'magic keyboard' and other magic stuff on jan 9 of this year and it is supposed to be automatic update 2.0.6

in that linked article is another link to take you to the apple site in which there is no download link so, i guess my stuff isn't magic
