apple defender security pop-up on ipad. Is it real and how do I get rid of it?

No. No such thing as Apple Defender. Such notifications are always scams.

If this is a popup on a website just close the browser tab or window to get rid of it.

Fake. If it is a website, just move on to a different page. Apple does not have a "Defender Security Center Notification". If it is a message/email, just delete.
