Messages disappear when i click on them running Ventura 13.2.1

Anytime I click on a message in "Messages" that is not in my contact list, it disappears....and sometimes it doesn't.

What is the fix??

l clicked on something in settings and now im not getting messages from anyone who isnt on my contact list.
