The S key on my MacBook pro doesn’t work. This happened one time and right before it stopped working the menu for alternative characters popped up (when you hold down a key). It has stopped working since

Well you neglect to say what exact 13" MBP, however there were issues w/ the "butterfly" era keyboards..

Typically keys in a straight row, keys associated on the diagonal, or like your example a single key failure—indicate a hardware issue.
You can plug in an external keyboard to get you through or as a work-a-round.
