A SuperDrive has to be plugged directly into a port. No hub or dock.

In addition:
—The SuperDrive must have a disk in it to show up on the desktop, just like in older Macs that had a built-in SuperDrive.
—The SuperDrive with a disk in it will not show up on the Desktop unless Finder > Preferences are set like this:
—I am not trying to be flippant here but I must ask, as this ranks high on the list of issues with SuperDrives: Is the silver side up?
