Does it matter which IC card you use, Suica or ICOCA?
I’m visiting Japan in March and would like to add an IC card to my Apple Wallet. Does the type of IC card matter (ICOCA, PASSMO or Suica)?

Suica, PASMO and ICOCA are compatible with each other and all Transit IC systems nationwide.
Suica has the advantage of working with non-Japanese issue VISA cards. PASMO and ICOCA are currently not working with non-JP VISA (as of February 2024).
Matter in what way?
Make sure the transaction is not being denied by your issuer for foreign transaction. You may need to call them to clear transactions with Mobile Suica.
Thank you, that helps. I don’t have a Japanese-issued VISA card, so I guess I need the SUICA. Unfortunately, every time I try to add a SUICA transit card to my Apple Wallet (with my American-issued VISA set up for Apple Pay), the transaction won’t complete. Apple Pay seems to work for other transactions, just not the transit card. I wonder if it’s something to do with the fact that the currency requested to load the SUICA card is Japanese Yen?
