MacBook Pro Very very slow after replacing SSD

Hi

I have a MacBook Pro Retina, 13 inch, late 2012

2.5GHz Dual-Core Intel i5

8GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Running macOS Catalina version 10.15.7

Recently I replaced the SSD with a larger one a

indmem dmpt256gb sata ssd

Since installing the SSD the machine has become unusably slow with nearly every action causing long periods where the beach ball is spinning and the machine is non responsive.

There was someone else who had exactly the same issue logged on here back in 2021 on a MacBook Air and it was suggested his problem was related to CleanMyMac being installed on his machine. This is not the case with my machine as I have freshly installed it several times with exactly the same problem, installing CleanMyMac made no difference at all.

My feeling is that its either a device incompatibility problem or a device driver compatibility problem but cannot run the machine’s HW diagnostics due to the EFI/Drivers/TestSupport.efi error, which apparently has no resolution.

Has anyone else seen a similar problem with this particular SSD? Or does anyone have any further diagnostic tools and/or ideas?

Or is this a known ‘bad’ match SSD?

have you enabled TRIM for this third-party drive?

if not, once you have written a lot of blocks on the drive, drive writes will slow to a crawl. Not 'filled up', just a bunch of data written.

in Terminal, use the commandL


sudo trimforce enable

enter your login password (you must be logged in as an Admin) which will not be echoed.

read the "Riiot Act" and agree to terms.

follow the directions and your Mac will restart automatically.

I suggest you run Disk Utility RepairDisk for an external drive, or or restart in safe mode for the boot drive, either of which will check the FreeList and TRIM most of the un-needed blocks.

So I've run the procedure described here, I ran the trim command and then booted it into safe mode. The safe mode boot took some time, I guess trim mode was doing it's magic, but when it finished I rebooted it into normal mode and now the machine is running beautifully, exactly as I hoped.
