Final Cut Pro timeline is suddenly glitchy on playback, seems corrupted

I've been working on a project in final cut for a few weeks. It's been working fine. I'm not sure if it's related, but tonight I imported some footage from a phone, into a new event. Then I started getting the spinning beach ball. This happened sometimes when I was placing still photos in the timeline, but I would simply quit FCP and restart, and things would be fine for a while.

Today though, after importing that media, the playback was very glitchy. The picture would freeze, but I'd hear the audio continuing. Or the audio would blank out for a few seconds, and then continue.

Seems like this is "corrupted" but I have no experience with trying to resolve such things. I've been using FCP 10.6.7

I've restarted my media server. I've restarted the computer. I've tried restoring library from back up. I keep getting the same issues. If the back ups are corrupted too, or you can't open a backup without it linking to the corrupted file, I'm not sure how to shake off this corrupted file. When I say file, I mean the project file to open the whole project: Library might be the more accurate term.

I'm a little worried since I don't know how to fix it. But I have faith this isn't the first time, and someone might have some suggestions.

Booting off an external SSD with a fresh OS install allows you to confirm whether or not there are issues with the macOS installed on your iMac's internal drive. For this simple external SSD test just create a new user in the new OS and go from there. Install FCP, create a new library and import fresh media onto the external SSD.

Migration means using Apple's Migration Assistant to copy a System's info and Users from another computer, Time Machine backup or another backup drive. This is great when you buy a new machine and want to migrate yourself from your old machine to the new machine. The caveat is that it's best to only migrate User info, no Applications or System files.

Correct, just to rule things out, no disk encryption (FileVault) to make the test as straightforward as possible.

Ultimately the goal is to quickly take the iMac's currently installed macOS out of the equation to see if it's the problem.

If there was a bad drive in the Jellyfish that could also cause glitchy playback and random freezes.

I might have found a solution. I tried a lot of what people suggested here on the forum thread (thanks, all.). But none of it seemed to work. So I contacted an editor I've worked with a lot, and we did a screen share to noodle around a few things. We spent a good 1.5 hours. Turns out the media was not playing back well even when I went to the source file on the drive, so playback issues were not confined to FCP. So he suggested that I update my Pro Video Formats files through Apple (to find it, google Pro Video Formats 2.3) and this seems to work. I installed those files. Then I restarted FCP and the problem seems to be gone, knock on wood.

Subsequently, when I looked at my system preferences, I noticed that my machine needs an update for the Sonoma OS, and I also noticed that among the features listed in the update is "Pro Video Formats" - so it might have been that Sonoma didn't have the files needed to run video properly on my machine.

What I'm still curious about is why this started to happen all of a sudden, when I'd been using FCP for weeks without any trouble. But then again, I don't know when I got Sonoma OS on my machine, it seems my iMac Pro did the update without my prompting. Anyway, hope this can help someone else.

Looks like I didn't need to purge Chrome from my system, or delete my preferences (some custom shortcuts that I need to figure out again) in FCP!

Okay I'm back from the Jellyfish server rabbit hole that pulled me in for the past week. (That's another story.)

Back to the issue at hand...

I've carried out the tests you recommended:

  • fresh install OS (Sonoma) onto an external SSD drive and run my iMac from that drive
  • made sure FileVault was OFF (it was defaulted off, after the fresh install)
  • fresh install of Final Cut Pro onto same SSD drive
  • moved media files and project file (the problem project with glitches) onto a separate external SSD drive.
  • (you suggested putting new media onto a drive and building a new project timeline in FCP, but) I just opened my problem project that was having all the glitches, and ....

No glitches in playback!!!

So I feel like we're getting somewhere, obviously! Thanks to everyone who has chimed in here on this thread, offering help. Much appreciated.

Now, I'm just not sure if the problem was the OS, or FCP, since I changed both variables. It seems it's hard to isolate them in the current test configuration. I suppose I could go back and start up from the original OS on my iMac, and do an uninstall and re-install of FCP, and see if I have the glitch problem again. That would tell me the problem was FCP, do you all agree?!!

If a fresh install of FCP doesn't solve it, then for sure it's the OS?

I just wish I could know what exactly was the problem. It worked fine until it didn't.

After I do that, it's probably time to do a complete fresh re-install of the OS and FCP and hope I'll get the same result: no glitches on playback, and finally getting back to my edit. This edit project is way behind. And there are two more projects coming down the pipe....

On further reflection, your problem sounds more like the classic symptoms of corruption in your project as you first suspected.

There is one simple (almost) foolproof test for this . . . close your existing Library/Project and open a new Library, import some new random video clips, create a new project in which you add effects, transitions, colour correction and see how it goes. Don't use the original clips as one of them may be corrupt and you are back where you started.

If everything is fine, it would indicate your original Library has a corrupt clip etc.

The whole test need take no longer than 5 minutes as you are not editing but just throwing things randomly into the timeline to create stress.

EDIT: You mentioned that it started after importing iPhone clips. Get rid of them and see if matters improve.

Even if they are the cause, deleting them may not get rid of the glitches as they may have contaminated the project in some way but it's worth trying.

Congrats on making progress Matthew!

Easy enough to reinstall FCP on the iMac drive and see if that helps. I would delete FCP preferences (hold command and option when launching FCP) and also delete all render files in the problem library.

I'm told that reinstalling the OS on recent macOS versions is a lot easier than before. Maybe Luis or Tom can chime in with a link to instructions. If you do go that route, make a couple backups first and then when you migrate back to the fresh OS install, *only* migrate your User info, no System Files, no Applications and no Network files. Download fresh apps from the AppStore or 3rd party sites.

**EDIT**

I just looked through your etrecheck report again and have a question about Zerotier. What do you use this for and is it active while you're editing?

Well I guess my glitch playback problem is finally resolved. In the end, I did a fresh install of the OS on my iMac drive, migrated user file from TimeMachine backup, along with some documents, and then a fresh install of Final Cut, of course. Now that this iMac OS system has never had Chrome, no FileVault, and has been purged of random applications acquired over the years...perhaps it will run clean for a while, knock on wood!

Thanks again for everyone's time and suggestions. I'm behind on my edits by a month, now, but have learned a few things.

FileVault can in fact degrade FCPX and other higher end app performance. It should never be used for video editing or 3D graphics. And it only protects from hackers trying to hack a hard drive. If someone steals your laptop and gets logged in, it won't matter, they still have access to your data. It's not all that serious of a security measure, but required by some industries that Apple sells to. Always leave it turned off.

Here are simple instructions to install a clean system in a fairly recent mac (any Apple Silicon, and Intel from around 2019 or perhaps 2018, depending on model).

1) Full backup using Time Machine; if possible, a second backup 2) System Settings->General->Transfer or Reset->Erase All Content and Settings This will leave only the OS itself, and erase all system modifications as well as all accounts, so you did do the backup beforehand, right? 3) When asked, choose to migrate from "another mac, drive or Time Machine backup"; select the TM backup drive used in step 1 4) Select to migrate ONLY the user accounts (no applications, settings or other files - otherwise you'd just be back to where you started) 5) Enjoy a properly working mac. Gradually install the applications that you do need. Never install any "cleaners" or "antivirus".
