How to restore your missing desktop folder in Finder

Whenever I am focused on the Desktop and try to copy files to it or create a folder, Finder gives me this error:

I've searched in Users and my Desktop folder has disappeared. Does anyone know why this might have happened or how to fix it?

To elaborate a bit on PRP_53's post: it is possible that you have activated "Documents and Desktop in iCloud", without realizing it.

Open a new Finder window (command-N) and click on iCloud Drive in the sidebar.

Is there a Desktop folder inside iCloud Drive?
