Restore Apple Mail Inbox

I use a Gmail account for my Apple Mail under Sonoma, and in my Inbox I kept several emails that were months old. Today I was writing a new Apple Mail rule and I made a mistake that caused most of the messages (including the old ones) to be deleted. I can restore the recent ones from Trash, but because the old messages are older than 1 month, how can I restore them? I've thought of the following two possibilities:

  1. My mail account shows that I'm an Admin. Can I somehow use an Admin function and if so how?
  2. Can I find and restore emails from Time Machine?

In step #2 you need to hold down the option key then select library, mail and then move on to TM. here is the steps again:

To restore mailbox:

Open Finder

Click “GO” in top menu bar then click option key

Click on Library

Open mail folder

Open V9 or V10 (or similar) folder

Then find the folders labeled with cryptic titles (at this point you could open TM if you want to go back in time)

Look down through those folders to find a mailbox (note: there may be more than one with same label).

If it contains email you want you can copy the entire folder to your desktop

Go back into mail and import that folder from your desktop

Note—

IMAP accounts stay on the server, so no local loss, when you re-sync

POP accounts download and remove from the server—therefor save your inbox/sent box if you want them

“On My Mac" is just that, local folders you created and moved mail into. So no loss

Mail has a setting for erasing deleted trash— I prefer manually.

I do not see how your are going to recover trashed and deleted email.

I found these instructions but in step 4 I don't see the Library folder. I seem to remember that there is something I need to do to see that folder, but I don't remember what.

  1. Click on the Finder icon in your dock to open a Finder window.
  2. From the top menu, select Go and then choose Enter Time Machine.
  3. Navigate to your Home directory (usually represented by your username).
  4. Inside your Home directory, open the Library folder.
  5. Within the Library folder, locate the Mail folder.
  6. You might see multiple folders at the next level. Look for the one starting with “V” that has the most recent modification date.
  7. Open that folder, and you’ll find several subfolders with long hexadecimal names.
  8. One of these subfolders corresponds to the mail account containing the mailbox you need.
  9. Open each subfolder until you find the right one.
  10. Finally, restore the file with the name of the missing mailbox (e.g., Small House Design.mbox) to your Desktop or another location (not the original location).
  11. Exit Time Machine when you’re done.
