There are a number of reasons that your AirTag is not reporting its last known location.

They are:

  • The AirTag is no longer being "seen" in the Apple Find My Network. That network consists of literally millions of iPhones. Any one of them would need to be within Bluetooth range (~30-40') of the tag to receive its ID. That phone would then relay that ID, along with the phone's GPS location, to the Apple servers over an active Internet connection. Since the tag's Bluetooth beacon only transmits every 3-5 mins, it may be possible that the phone may have moved outside of range between transmissions.
  • The AirTag's battery is weak or depleted.
  • The AirTag is in such a location that its transmission cannot traverse through any objects to be picked up by an iPhone.
  • Someone found it, and removed the battery.

Not sure what you mean by "these things are never what you expect them to be." What exactly were you expecting then? If it is to be able to have near real-time location information updates, then you should consider a device that relies on GPS, not Bluetooth.
