My father in law passed away and I need to bypass the lock to reset the laptop

My father in law passed away 6 months ago. We have his new laptop, but we don't have his apple ID password. I've erased the laptop, but I can't get past the lock screen to install new software. Can a Genius reset the computer if I have a death certificate?
