Bricked Mac

Hello!

One of my friends gave me his bricked 2011 Macbook Pro so I could try and fix it. The problem with it is that it won't boot up. When I boot it up, it loads a bit and then it shuts down and then it boots up again and so on. So I've decided to go into Recovery mode but turns out I can't use Recovery Mode because the startup volume is corrupted. Then I tried booting in Internet Recovery mode, but once it finishes loading, it puts the Mac in a boot loop again. I've also tried reinstalling the OS (High Sierra) from a bootable USB, but when I select the stick on boot, it gives me the prohibition sign. I managed to boot up the Mac on safe mode, I used Disk Utility to repair the partitions but it was in vain. It only told me that the startup volume is corrupted and the only way to fix it is by using Recovery Mode which I can't. And also, the only way I can boot up his Mac is by holding the power button for a couple of seconds, then plugging in the charger while still holding the power button. And apparently the Mac is saying that it can't show the battery percentage while the charger is plugged in. If I plug the charger out, the Mac shuts down. Can this Mac be fixed? I know this was long but I really want to fix this Mac. Thank you!

Does it reach the utilities menu showing the following options?

  • Restore from Time Machine Backup
  • Reinstall macOS
  • Safari
  • Disk Utility

When does it reboot? How far does it get when booting Internet Recovery Mode if it doesn't reach the utilities screen?

How did you create this macOS High Sierra USB installer?

Probably a bad battery. You may want to remove the battery.

Try removing the internal hard drive to see whether you can boot into Internet Recovery Mode using Command + Option + R. Sometimes an internal drive failure can cause problems booting even from external media.

To see if the laptop is working, you can try creating & booting a Knoppix Linux v8.6.1 USB stick (if v8.6.1 is no longer available, then use the latest v9.x. You need to download the DVD .iso file with "EN" in the name for ENglish. Use the downloaded .iso file as source for Etcher (Mac, Windows, Linux). Option Boot the Knoppix USB stick and select the orange icon labeled "EFI". Give Knoppix lots of time to finish booting since the Mac may appear to be frozen on the Apple boot picker menu while Knoppix is booting (it is due to a macOS firmware issue that Knoppix won't show any boot activity until much later in the boot process). If Knoppix boots, then you can check the health of the internal Apple hard drive by using GSmartControl located "Start menu icon --> System Tools --> GSmartControl". Feel free to post the complete text health report here using the "Additional Text" icon which looks like a piece of paper on the forum editing toolbar. The complete report is found by clicking "Save Report".

You can also try testing the memory by creating & booting a Memtest86 USB stick. Again, use the .img file as a source for Etcher.

You can also try running the Apple Diagnostics to see if any hardware issues are detected. However, it won't detect most issues, but it never hurts to try.
