I have an iPhone X and my wife has an iPhone XS. My phone is only running OS 16.7.5 but my wifes phone is running 17.3.1. I have seen comments that the X cannot run anything further than OS 16 but if that is the case why is my wifes phone running OS 17? I would have thought the limitations would be across the entire series of X phones?

iPhone XR and XS and higher models can.
Can't explain decisions made by Apple, but I suspect it has to do with the fact that the XR and XS were introduced almost a year after the X, so different hardware in the XR and XS.
XR and XS are a year newer than X. X was released in 2017, XR and XR in 2018.
Foolishly I didn't look hard enough until after I posted and then discovered exactly what you just told me.
