Why are my iPhone 12 and wife's iPhone 8 on different iOS versions?

My iPhone 12 is on OS 18 but my wife’s iPhone 8 is on OS 16.

Why aren’t they both on the latest release?

Because an iPhone 8 has older technology in it, and is not capable of running with the newer operating systems which are more demanding of CPU speed and the amount of memory.

• If you have an iPhone 8 or X, you can update to 16.7.10

• If you have an iPhone SE (2nd generation or later), or XR through 16, you can update to 18.3.2
