Current Apple Watches not compatible with newish iPad or oldish iPhone?

I'm wanting to step into the modern world with a new Apple Watch. I have the original Watch released, but want the new features mainly for sleep tracking (REM, Deep, etc). I guess the O2 oximeter type feature is goners...

But! Apple Watch won't work with iPad? It must have a newer iPhone (newer than my iPhone 6+, which is stuck at iOS 12)?

Seems odd that I'd have to get a Fitbit and not be in the Apple world for everything.

So question is: Do I have all this right? iPad at iPadOS 17, older iPhone... No can do a new Watch?

thx

The current Apple Watch models require an iPhone XS,XR,11,12,13,14,15, or the current SE, running iOS 17

The iPad is not an option.

If you want to get a FitBit, that is a perfectly acceptable route to take. The volunteers in this user-to-user technical support forum do not profit from any of your purchases, and we only wish to help.

Apple watches have never ever worked with iPads, only iPhones.

watchOS 10 requires iPhone XS or later with iOS 17 and one of the following Apple Watch models: Apple Watch Series 4. Apple Watch Series 5. Apple Watch SE.

Your iPhone 6+ is long obsolete and won’t pair with new Apple watches. You would have to purchase a new iPhone as well. Time matches on
