Can’t get ANC - keep getting “Place both AirPods in ears” message

Just got AirPod pros and when I try to turn on noise cancellation or even do the ear fit test I keep getting the message “place both AirPods in ears” - when they are! I have tried forgetting and re-pairing but that doesn’t resolve the issue. Very frustrating as I bought these specifically for the ANC.

I took them to the Apple Store and they knew right away. :( They also looked up the serial number and saw others had enquired about that # in other locations! One easy tell is that on the genuine ones each individual AirPod has its own serial number not the same one as on the case. also the rubber tips should come off relatively easily; on the fake ones they are very hard if not impossible to pull off. Good luck!

Hi carol-w-vancouver, welcome to the Apple community

I hope you are doing well 🤗

When you bought the AirPods, were they new?

When you see this message, it indicates a problem with one or both AirPods. The sensor for ear detection may be dirty or broken.

Please try cleaning your AirPods or replacing the defective one(s).

If the issue is not resolved, feel free to come back to us or contact Apple support for more information.

There are some shiny black parts on the AirPods; they are the sensors. Try using a tissue, but if they are new, they are probably not dirty.

If the AirPods' active noise cancellation (ANC) does not work, it may be because they are counterfeit or fake. Before contacting Apple Support, please check if they are genuine using this document:

If you determine they are not counterfeit, contact Apple Support to prepare for a technical test and/or replacement.

See you soon👋
