So that we can help you best, please tell us exactly which Mac, model and year you’re having trouble with, and what macOS version you’re running. Find that info by clicking the Apple menu () at the top-left of your screen and then select About This Mac. (Note- for privacy and security please never post your serial number.)

If your Mac is not a 2012 or newer model then it is unlikely able to run an OS that can support a modern web browser. Browser support in El Capitan is pretty much done, in High Sierra it is waning and in Mojave and Catalina the writing is on the wall. To keep up with current web connection and security standards you really need to be able to run macOS 11 Big Sur or newer. That will require a Mac built in 2013 or later.

Yes, that Mac can run several more modern versions. BUT: do not proceed unless/until you have a complete, recent, trusted backup on hand -- because the drive format will be changed in later versions.

if you upgrade to 10.13 High Sierra, or 10.14 Mojave, your boot SSD drive will be modified to Apple File System format automatically, as you upgrade.

if you later choose to install MacOS 10.15 Catalina, older, 32-bits only Applications are no longer supported, and you will need to check compatibility. it is not clear whether Catalina will install directly on an older drive like your 10.11 El Captain drive.

the last supported macOS for your model Mac is MacOS 12 Monterey. it is not clear whether Monterey will install directly on an older drive like your 10.11 El Captain drive.

Which you choose depends on why you want to upgrade.
