Need to change location of where Pages documents are stored from on my iPad to iCloud but afraid of losing docs. Thank you

Shortly after getting my iPad Pro 12.9 (2nd generation?) I contacted Apple for help with a problem I no longer remember. The technician said in order to fix the problem, I had to change the location of my Pages docs from iCloud to “on my iPad” which is where they remain stored.

I want to change the storage location back to iCloud but I’m afraid of losing my docs and I have a lot of them. Pages app is a sort of memory device for me so everything is stored in the documents. Please, can you tell me how to make sure my documents will be safe before changing the storage location in settings? Obviously, I’m not very tech savvy. Thank you for your help.

iPad Pro, iPadOS 17

Changing the default Pages storage location from "on my iPad" to "iCloud" should not cause any loss of data. However, if you are concerned, you can manually backup the files stored on your iPad to iCloud, other Cloud storage provider, or to connected USB storage.

All documents that have been saved to "on my iPad" will be accessible using the iPad's Files App. Open the Files App - and from the sidebar's list of Locations, select On My iPad; the pane to the right of the sidebar will expand to show the App folder libraries that are stored on your iPad.

Scroll down the list to find the Pages folder. The folder will expand to show all the Pages documents that are stored on your iPad. From here, files can be simply copied to another location of your choice.
