Apple TV Arc not working

I would like to control the audio of my Samsung TV using the HDMI ARC setting instead of IR. However, this doesn't seem to work: with the same HDMI cable (non-Apple original) and in the same HDMI port on the TV, my Xbox can control the TV's audio. It almost seems like the Apple TV has a bug and can't command the audio through HDMI. Do you know how I could solve this?

I found it!!

Thanks to the Samsung community though, LOL!

From your TV box...

Settings > Remotes and Devices

Scroll down to Volume Control

Mine is currently set to "Auto via HDMI (Receiver)"

I might not be understanding your reply, but I'm not alone because the OA disagrees too.

My TV 4K (128gb + Ethernet (Latest Gen)) is connected to an LG brand TV and my Apple TV remote (Physical remote and/or the iPhone remote) has almost completely replaced the OEM remote that came with the TV.

When I power on the TV box, it turns on the TV and goes to the correct HDMI port. Then, we can control the TV volume using any of the remote controls (Stock Apple, iPhone, or OEM TV remotes). Not only that, we have an LG Soundbar connected to the HDMI-arc port and the TV box and/or our iPhones all can control the volume of the sound bar. Just to clarify, the TV is sending the signal to the TV and it's the TV that is controlling the sound bar (on, off, volume), all of this is done via the little remote control that came with the Apple TV box.

You're right, I know you are. I've tried to help you the best that I can and now I'm afraid to tell you that you should turn to support from Samsung. I'm almost certain that there must be something in your TV settings.

If you’re rolling with the public betas, the second-to-latest beta update broke the HDMI controlling.

before this update i was able to control my apple tv using my Sony remote, but after the update this is no longer possible. Had to dust off the old apple tv touch remote/siri remote to continue using.

hope this gets fixed asap

I found this, but there are two things about it that I see:

  1. I don't believe that it really applies to the problem you are having.
  2. The instructing and the picture they are showing don't seem to jive with what I'm seeing in tvOS 17.3

Use HDMI ARC or eARC with your Apple TV 4K - Apple Support

I found a way to test your HDMI cable by going to Settings > Video and Audio > Check HDMI Connection, but you already know that your cable is fine and works with your Xbox.

So... I'm thinking that it could be a setting inside your TV menu. While your TV box is connected, go into your TV settings and have a look around. I'm wondering if you'll find a setting that allows your TV box to control the audio. Smart TV's are smart, they know what is plugged into their ports. My guess is that your Xbox has a permission that your TV doesn't.

Hopefully this will get you fixed up 😉

CEC support may differ by device, and not all possible CEC features are supported by all devices that support CEC. Volume control over HDMI-CEC is a feature for AV receivers, not for TVs. Not one model TV is known to support volume control from connected devices over HDMI-CEC. Not sure what Xbox is doing (possibly altering the gain on the input?), but I’m sure it is not actually sending volume control signals to the TV over HDMI.

… instead of IR

IR works fine. Why trying to avoid it?

This is not true. Apple TV would be able to control the TV volume via HDMI. The Xbox controller does not have IR, and in the settings, it specifically allows adjusting the TV volume with HDMI. The reason I want to switch to using HDMI instead of IR is that Apple provides the ability to control the TV volume directly from the iPhone in the "Siri Remote" section, but to do so, HDMI must be set up instead of IR since the iPhone obviously does not have IR.
