can't get to login screen to change password

Just given a mac air a2681 by my brother- it won't recognise my password, nor will it get to a screen where I can change it


MacBook Air, macOS 14.2

You'll need to reset the login password on this Mac: If you forgot your Mac login password - Apple Support


What your brother needs to do, however, before giving you his Mac: What to do before you sell, give away, trade in, or recycle your Mac - Apple Support


This will put the Mac back to its "fresh out of the box" state, where you can set it up however you want. If your brother doesn't do what's described in the "What to do..." link I provided, then that Mac will be "tied" to his AppleID, and make life a LOT more difficult for you.
