Can't change the custom image in Contacts [Ventura]

I can drag a new photo onto the custom image circle on a card, and it will change briefly, then after a few seconds revert to the old image (or whatever was there before). But if I click on the image circle to bring up the edit window, it shows the new image - the one I dragged onto the circle, which disappeared after a few seconds. I've tried restarting, turning off Internet access (no iCloud), and reloading the contacts database from a time machine backup. No luck! Thanks for any help!

Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

Thanks. Same behavior in safe mode. On some cards, the custom image flips back to "before" spontaneously a few seconds after I drag a new photo onto the custom image circle. On others, the new custom image stays in place until I click away to a different card and click back, at which point it's reverted to the old image. And same behavior after restarting following the safe mode test.
