How to speed up Gmail message loading time on Mac

I'm always annoyed at how long it takes messages from my gmail account to load up on Mac mail. The titles appear in the left column right away, but when I click on them, it can take up to 30 minutes for the message to load and be read on the right side of the screen. It's a drag when time is of the essence. There is no problem with the iPad

Rebuilding the mailbox doesn't seem to do anything to speed it up, nor does emptying the trash. I've even resorted to starting a reply to the messages in order to see what they are
