I would avoid HP printers completely since HP loves to change the printers' behavior with a later firmware update. HP is notorious for blocking third party ink cartridges with a later printer firmware update. Plus HP all-in-one printers which include a scanner will not even allow you to scan a page to the computer if any of the ink cartridges are out of ink. Plus the quality of HP printers has deteriorated once they moved production to China about 15 years ago. I used to always recommend HP printers decades ago, but no longer.

I've been happy with our Brother black & white laser printer. I've been recommending them to friends & family for 10 years now. A lot of forum contributors here also seem to have good success with Brother printers as well, although I've never tried their inkjets or multi-function devices.

If you provide us with some details on how you use the printer, we might be able to steer you appropriately.

Some things that would help:

  • Laser or inkjet?
  • Average monthly pages printed.
  • All in one, or just a plain printer?
  • (If all in one, with or without auto document feeder?)
  • Do you print photos on photo paper? How picky are you on the quality of printed photos?
  • Standard paper sizes, or sometimes larger than standard? (Wide format)

I noticed in your signature you're on MacOS 13.3. The current MacOS for your 2022 MacBook Pro is Sonoma 14.3.1.

Thank you MrHoffman for that excellent article about selecting a printer!

As for me personally, I have a Deep Hatred for inkjet printers, because historically, if you failed to print something regularly, the ink dried inside the head and the ink cartridge or the head needed to be replaced or dis-assembled and cleaned.

I currently have two laser printers, one color and one black-and-white. Both are connected via Ethernet to my home network so that they are accessible from any device on my home network.
