MacBook Pro screen turns black when tilted past certain angles, sometimes just randomly

Regarding to this question someone asked

"Hi, I have a MacBook Pro and recently when I tilt my screen back past a certain angle the screen turns black. I can't have the screen straight up otherwise it turns black so I can't do any of my work. Also my Mac is still on even when the screen turns black and it does not have to do with the battery."

And the answer that was provided

"If you have the MacBook Pro 13" (2016) model, then the laptop may qualify for the free Apple Display repair program:

13-inch MacBook Pro Display Backlight Service Program - Apple Support

That's exactly the model I have. This screen fault only started appearing early this year, and it's getting worse. Sometimes I have to power down and restart my laptop to get the screen working. And I have to carry external monitor to my DJ gigs in case it will go black during a set which would be a disaster.

I bought my computer on April 2017, so it's over 5 years old. Does this mean I have to pay hundreds of euros for the repair myself, even if it's a recognized production fault on Apple's end?

Does not sound fair that a normal person would have to pay and not the multi-billion company.

Unfortunately Apple never acknowledged the design/manufacturing flaw with any other models even though they have the same issue as the MBPro 13" (2016). You will need to pay a lot to replace the Display Assembly.

If the Battery has never been replaced before (or recently), then that may be another cost you may incur soon ($250 US). If you have the non-touchbar model, then there are two other considerations since the SSD in the non-touchbar model has a high rate of failure and the USB-C ports are integrated onto the Logic Board so if the USB-C ports are not holding the cables snugly, then it would not be worth repairing.

Also, the 2017 model is now "Vintage" so repairs are only possible as long as parts are still available. macOS 13.x Ventura is the last supported version of macOS on the 2017 model and will stop receiving security updates at the end of 2025. Many third party developers will also not be updating their apps once Apple drops support for Ventura so any apps which utilize online services will begin to stop working at some point after that time once the Internet & online services change enough to break the older software. Just something else to consider.
