How to fix unresponsive open and save dialogs in macOS Sonoma

Hi Apple Community,

after upgrading to macos Sonoma open and save dialoges in any apps remain beachballing unresponsive for seconds. While waiting Activity Monitor shows "Open and Save Panel Service" with high cpu. Finally I can choose files or save as expected. This affects all user accounts. But it does not happen when booted in safe mode.

I'd be happy about any support or hint to solve this issue.

Thanks in advance!

Disabling iCloud Drive resolves the issue.

System Settings->Apple ID->iCloud->iCould Drive, click to disable it.

Yesterday trying everything before i go to the hard ones. PR, SMC, Restore Mode first aid, repair Permissions... with no success. Since theres no delay in Secure Mode and with a new User it have to be one of the Extensions. Curious thing, theres no application which has a significant cpu raise, also not the opensavepanel (max 60%) BUT the Finder raises during that open or save delay up to 130% of cpu usage in Background.

Your system drive is starting to get full - about 60GB free. It's best to try and keep at least 15-20% free at all times.

You also have an external drive. Try ejecting this drive.

Does the slow Open and Save continue if this drive is not connected?

If not, then the drive is the problem.

Also, I wonder if any of these file extensions may be playing a part:

Finder sync extensions:

New File Menu Extension - /Applications/NewFileMenu.app

Mountain Duck Finder Integration - /Applications/Mountain Duck.app

Seafile FinderSync - /Applications/Seafile Client.app

New File Menu Lite Extension - /Applications/NewFileMenuLite.app

Adobe Content Synchronizer Finder Extension - /Applications/Utilities/Adobe Sync/CoreSync/Core Sync.app

Thanks for your view.

Removing external drive doesn't help.

Disk space seems not to be the point. I have the same problem with my Intel iMac which has much more free disk space.

Regarding the finder sync extensions: How can I remove them (temporarily)? When I move the Apps out of the '/Applications' the LaunchAgents might be still in place...

Safe Mode will also eliminate Third Party Software, extensions and drivers from loading.

It will only load the Minimum amount of Core Apple Processes to allow the the computer to function at a reduced Level of Performance

My Learned Colleague 👍 has mentioned External Drive and Empty Space

What is this all about ⬇️

disk3s2 - F******O

        Filesystem: APFS

        Mount point: /Volumes/F******O

        Encrypted

        Used: 854.74 GB

        Shared values

            Size: 2.00 TB

            Free: 1.15 TB

Then there is this ⬇️

 Little Snitch Agent.app

Blocking some Normal Outbound Network Traffic is not going to help either

I have the same problem with a iMac 5K. Everywhere the 5-8 Seconds delay and beachball before the Open/save Dialog is available. This occurs after the Update to Sonoma 14.3.1. Tried many things also look at Activity Monitor where nothing special happens during that delay also OpenSavePanel not using much cpu or another app. At last i start in Safemode and there the problem not occurs, but how to find out which Extension is the problem?

I have nothing installed, its not my Mac, i only try to help my collegue. The problem is, theres no backups until now. I told him to get an external Hardrive for a Backup first, before i reinstall sonoma again or try the harder things, MacKeeper i dont saw and he dont tell me that he use it or try himself to solve problems with it.

Its not possible to uninstall or to remove MacKeeper? I also dont know so far what he have done with it or if he have use it beside installation so far. Why if i create a new User the problem not occur?

I don't see any evidence that MacKeeper is still installed, only that it was installed last month. Maybe it was installed, then uninstalled. I have to call it out, because this is a very bad program - effectively, malware.

Again, maybe it is not there anymore.

I strongly recommend that your friend does a full backup soon, then do a clean install and only migrate the accounts and test.

Its really not there anymore and also absolute no files to find in the system. So MacKeeper is not the problem. Also the update to 14.4, what i hoping perhaps change something, not helping. In every program further slow open and save dialogues. A clean install is at the moment no option due to the lack of time.
