Apple TV 2nd Generation remote will not pair.

Tried the "Menu plus left button for 6 seconds" option repeatedly, but screen remans the same "Your Apple TV isn't connected to the network" and two icons at bottom of screen, "Computers" (highlighted) and "Settings" (not highlighted). The white light blinks when the Menu + left buttons are pressed, then goes steady, then blinks again if buttons still pressed for ~ 10 sec. When any button on remote is pressed, I get the three blinks (meaning 'remote not paired').

Any suggestions? I don't have an ethernet cable easily available, so am stuck with the wi-fi connection option.

Thanks to all for the replies. After much frustration and multiple days, I finally met with success after following one reply by holding the Menu/Right buttons down, not for six seconds, but until the linked chain symbol appeared on screen, (which took about 25 seconds of holding both buttons down). Everything is now running as advertised.

The legacy model Apple TV (2nd generation) [A1378] from 2010 needs the old style Apple Remote (aluminum) A1294, not the modern Siri Remote.

The modern Apple TV 4K (2nd generation) [A2169] from 2021 needs the Siri Remote, which pairs differently (Menu + Volume Up.)

You may link the remote again as described in: If your Apple TV remote isn’t working - Apple Support - Wayback Machine (second half of the page). Do both steps: the unlinking and then the linking. Menu + Left for unlinking, then Menu + Right for linking.
