Even if you go to:
Settings>Sounds & Haptics>Calendar Alerts?
or
Settings>Notifications>Calendar>Sound?
Even if you go to:
Settings>Sounds & Haptics>Calendar Alerts?
or

Try a "forced" restart of your device using these instructions: Put it on charge for at least half an hour, then, keeping it plugged in, use these gestures:
In rapid sequence, press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the side (power) button. Only when the Apple logo appears (it might take 10-20 seconds), release that button (ignore all other screens that might appear, the one with the "slider" to turn the device off included).
If the issue persists, I suggest that you update your iPhone 12 to the latest iOS version (now 17.3.1).
If the issue still persists, I recommend that you contact Apple Support directly:--> Contact Apple for support and service

Carefully followed your suggestion and did a "forced" restart. No change. The calendar alert is still the default sound. I will contact Apple Support directly and see if I can get some help there. Giulio, thanks for your help.

Yes. I did both of those “Settings” and the sound remains the default.
