I have an external WD hard drive with different users from a previous macbook.
I am trying to access the files but they all have a red minus through them.
I have tried to change the permissions through the "Get Info" and then "Sharing & Permissions" method but it says i don't have the necessary permissions.
Are there any other ways to access these files or are they gone?
Is that your Time Machine backup? If so, do not modify anything there at all or you will corrupt your backups!!
Instead, click on the "Enter Time Machine" backup button on the upper right of the Finder window to access your backups.
If my assumption is incorrect, then please provide more details on where these files are stored and whether you are accessing them from another computer and/or user account.
You will require the previous user's credentials.
