Why can’t I download apps for free

You will need a valid payment method even if the apps are free to download. You will not be charged for downloading a free app but if:

• the app offers a free trial and you do not cancel 24 hours before it ends, then you will be charged.
• the app offers in-app purchases, a payment method would be needed in case you want to use one of those.

Developers have to pay a yearly fee for you to download their apps. They also cost money and time to make. By being able to download the app for free, you are given a chance to see if you find the app useful. Developers hope that you do and will further support their efforts depending on which deferred payment method they used. Without you having a valid payment method there is no possible way they would be able to recoup any of their costs.
