Mac mini with a Samsung - monitor no sound

bought a Mac mini and a Samsung CF39 monitor to go with it. Everything works great except there is no sound through the Samsung monitor, only the Mac mini. I see the cf39 listed in Sound Settings but the output volume is greyed out. They are connected through the HDMI cord that came with the monitor. The setting are correct on both the monitor and the Mac mini. Do I need a different HDMI cable?

are you sure the monitor have build in speakers at all? it's not default they all do

27" Curved LED Monitor Monitors - LC27F398FWNXZA | Samsung US

specs say

  • Outputs
  • Audio / Headphone (3.5mm)
  • Yes

so it could be that it will play audio if you connect a headset or pc speakers to the 3.5mm mini port on the monitor

and disable the option if it knows no audio source is connected to the monitor
