Using a phone flashlight to check for scratches on your iPhone lens is generally safe and should not cause harm to the lens. The flashlight emits light, and you are essentially inspecting the lens surface for any scratches or imperfections.

The low-powered LED flashlights on smartphones shouldn't generate enough heat or concentrated light to damage the iPhone lens.

However, some factors can increase the risk:

  • Prolonged exposure: Holding the flashlight directly at the lens for an extended period (several minutes or more) could potentially cause heat damage, especially if the flashlight is particularly bright.
  • Distance: Holding the flashlight too close to the lens can concentrate the light more intensely, increasing the potential for heat damage. Aim for a distance of at least a few inches.
  • Defective flashlight: If the flashlight on the other phone is malfunctioning and generating excessive heat, it's best to avoid using it altogether.
