I plugged it in forgetting that I guess I formatted it many months ago but had not used it. It showed that it was like half full? Maybe I already used it to backup. I decided to start over as I only want to use it to travel and
store photos. I erased it. I tried to reformat it to expat but when I do I get:
The volume “My Passport” on disk4s1 couldn’t be unmounted because it is in use by process 31367 (diskimagesiod)
What am I doing wrong?

You have to use the tiny "view" menu to 'Show all devices', the select the PHYSICAL device by its immutable-manufacturer-given name.

don't worry about the math. A disk Image is compressed to that all the free space on it is removed. when you mount it, the free space will be restored back to the full 2 TB size again.
But if it did not all go, select the PHYSICAL device and ERASE again. If it refuses, pretend it said "Are you sure?" and immediately choose ERASE again.

I thought I followed those exact instructions. However, after I did the Erase I saw that on the left under
disk images it shows one Apple Disk Image Media and two Apple UDIF read-only compressed (zlib) Media
for the Passport. I got rid of the two UDIF things. There is still a disk image showing 2 MB of WD software.
How is that still on there if it got erased?
