Subsequent emails with the same recipients and attachments did not have the same problem. Apple Support focused on my MacBook as the problem. I think it happened as the email was routed around.

Same problem here. In my case the added message appeared in the subject line of an email that I copied to myself. I am wondering if it might be somehow related to the third party VPN that I use. Perhaps an overly sensitive sentinel app flagged it?
Same here. (Not so) funny thing is that I suspected a friend's semi-profi email server, or his Windows PC, or his Mozilla client, but a search revealed many Apple Mail users had the same problem recently...
While many users have the same issue, has there been any solutions proposed to remove the "Virus Error" addition to emails?
Same thing happened to me today.
I got the same message Virus Error on an email I copied myself on. I also have McAfee and my system is clean.
I sent an email via Apple Mail and (Virus Error) was added to the beginning of the subject line. Needless to say, this worried the recipients but multiple tests, with Apple Support helping, have indicated no virus present anywhere.
