It seems that my updated Sonoma is 14.3.1 is corrupted. Every time I go from one user to another everything is changed. Ten support wants to reinstall my OS system. Have a New Toshiba Portable Storage, 4TB. It's been formatted for MacBook Pro 17" vintage computer with El Capitan OS

10.11.6. I doin't want to use Time Machine.

How to do this backup?

If you don't wish to use the built-in Time Machine app, I suggest Carbon Copy Cloner from Bombich.com as a great alternative for Mac back up. SuperDuper! from Shirt Pocket is another app you might look at.

Whatever you back up method, it is generally advised to use a drive that is dedicated to that method and not used to also store other data. If (when) the drive fails then all data including backups are at risk of loss.

The best backup strategy is 3-2-1. That is three copies of the data, using two different methods and with one copy safely stored offsite.

May I ask why you don't want to use TM?
