How do I connect my 2019 Macbook Pro as a second screen for my 2020 M1 Mac Mini

I'm trying to use my Macbook Pro as a second screen for my Mac Mini. I have a HP monitor connected via HDMI to the mini but I can't seem to figure out how to connect the Mackbook. I have purchased a dual end thunderbolt cable, thinking that would work. But all I can muster is mirroring, not using it as a second display. Thanks so much for the help.

Those newer Mac's do not support a cabled Target Display Mode connection.

If you want full functional dual displays for the Mac mini, then your best bet is to get a second external display.

Those Macs are new enough that – provided they are running Monterey or later – you could set up either Mac as an AirPlay Receiver for AirPlay to Mac.

AirPlay is not as good as a hardware connection to a real monitor – or a Target Display Mode connection. I believe there may be a very limited selection of resolutions. There may be other quality compromises. But since you have both of the machines already, there wouldn't be any cost to play around with it.
