trying to connect my ipod classic with macbook thats using 10.7.5

i bought an old macbook pro running 10.7.5 primarily to communicate with my ipod classic with valuable music on it. when i connect ipod it says i need to update ipod to 10.7. i'm not sure how to do this and i'm worried it will erase my ipod. any advice?

Thank you everyone for all your help and advice....LOL.... there's noone out there.

I figured it out with my Columbo skills. i only had to update itunes to 10.7 and it began talking to my trusty ol' ipod.
