Mail crashes when opening

I have an iMac 20-inch early 2008 running OS 10.11.6. Mail crashes when opening even when I open it pressing the SHIFT key.

I tested opening it using my guest account and it crashes there too. It is weird because I have the same mail accounts on my Macbook Pro running OS 13.6.3 and Mail works just fine there.

I thought of deleting the mail accounts from my Mail on my iMac but I don't know how to do it without opening Mail.

Any help will be most welcome.

Thanks for the detailed step-by-step orientation.

I think I have found the "culprit".

I launched Mail without setting up any accounts. It opened and did not crash. I added my iCloud account - internet accounts - it downloaded the messages and then crashed. I unchecked mail in the Internet Accounts pane and Mail did not crash.

I tried to add a Yahoo account and then an AOL account. Both attempts returned a message saying it was able to verify the account. However, I get on my Macbook that my Yahoo account was used sign in to a new third party (?) application.

Now I can see that the problem lies with my iCloud account. I don't think it is compatible with 10.11.6 anymore.

Thanks a lot.

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

If still no good Disconnect from the Internet, then start Mail, look for the last rec'd eMail.

Does Mail crash if no internet?

Quit Mail & login to your WebMail in a Browser, if possible delete any later eMails there after the last rec'd one on the Mac.

If you have no POP accounts & they’re all IMAP accounts then in Mail’s Mailbox menu choose Rebuild.

Yes that will do it. Check the box only to have it magically un-check itself is one of iCloud Keychain's more endearing features. All I can suggest in that regard is to "sign out" of iCloud, and "sign in" again — the iCloud equivalent of "turn it off and on again". It's annoying beyond reason.

Assuming that doesn't work, try "signing out" and then restart your Mac. Then, sign in again.

If that doesn't work... there are some Keychain entries that can be deleted, but I hope things don't get that far because I'll have to look them up.

An update.

I have deleted all accounts on Mail except the Yahoo one. I also and signed out of iCloud on my iMac. After that, I opened Mail and it worked fine. When I tried to add my iCloud account back in it immediately crashed.

It seems the problem is related to Mail syncing with iCloud. But I have looked high and low and was not able to find a solution.

Frustrating.

Almost certainly, Mail is crashing because it is attempting to make sense of an email protocol it is too old to understand. That problem is going to occur with increasing frequency as more email messages will be composed in compliance with those protocols.

It's all... "for your security" of course 🙄

What you can do: press and hold a Shift key while launching the Mail app from Applications or the Dock.

  • That action will cause Mail to open in windowed mode (not full screen) with no message already selected.
  • Release the Shift key when the Mail viewer window opens.

In so doing, you may scroll through your email message previews to identify the problematic message(s) and delete them. If that becomes too difficult or tedious to accomplish in the Mail app, at least narrow down the problem to one or a few recent email messages that may be the likely culprits, and then use your email service provider's webmail interface to read or otherwise dispose of them.

Eventually, you're going to need a newer Mac, one capable of running a more recent operating system than 10.11.6 "El Capitan". That's just the way technology goes.

Tried signing out and back in a couple of times and the blue check mark has not been disabled this time. Tried to open Mail and it crashed right after launching. I can see the inbox for a couple of seconds and then it crashes.

I have used Pacifist and was able to extract Mail from the install disk. Installed in on my desktop because there was a permission issue that did not allow me to replace Mail in the apps folder. This extracted version crashes too.

Thank you for your thorough reply.

I tried opening Mail while holding the Shift key but to no avail. It shows the inbox window for about 10 seconds and then it crashes again. After crashing, it generates a mile-long report that is Greek to me.

I will try to reinstall the whole system and see what happens. I'll post here what happens after I reinstall the whole system.
