Peer to Peer airplay/screen mirroring on Samsung Smart TVs with Airplay 2 built in

From my understanding and testing, peer to peer airplay works with WiFi ENABLED on an Apple device (iPhone, Mac, etc) but not actually connected to a WiFi network, and an Apple TV that can also be connected or not connected to a WiFi Network. The Apple device and the Apple TV create an Ad Hoc peer to peer connection.

I did some testing on Samsung Smart TVs with Airplay 2 built in and this does not work. Airplay only seems to work when both the Apple device and the Samsung TV with Airplay 2 built in are on the same network. Is this by design? Does peer to peer airplay only work between Apple devices? I only found 1 article online confirming this so I thought I would ask this question here for more confirmation!

Peer-to-peer AirPlay always had a limited scope, as it enabled AirPlay on a super-small one-on-one ad hoc network — without outside connections. Thus only for non-DRM content stored on the sending device.

It was intended for the Apple TV box. It may not be implemented in AirPlay-enabled smart TVs.

If you have outside connections (e.g. 4G/5G mobile internet), then you could set up a mobile hotspot instead — if your cellular provider supports/allows such use for TV devices. I.e. let your phone be the Wi-Fi access point that the TV connects to.
