Lets tests this out first. When the phone is connected and you can make calls thru the car, what happens when you play music thru the phone? Does the sound come from the phone or do you hear nothing? If you hear nothing then your car probably supports the media connection and you need to figure out where the button is to connect it. It is often called MEDIA.
If you HEAR sound on your phone then media is NOT connected and there may be more to do.
Some cars have multiple connections to your phone. The older the car is the more likely this is true. Hondas as recent as 2017 work like this.
The primary is to connect the as a phone. My Honda Odessey does this perfectly.
If you dig deeper into the audio system you can see that there are times you have to give it permission to
use as a media device. - Honda if connected when I first turn on works GREAT! IF I have to select to connect it then I have to also select to connect it as a MEDIA device because in this mode it is NOT automatic...I don't know why but its not.
I have seen systems that require approval for contact transfer, recent call list, texts and even email each requiring you to approve or setup connection to the phone. There might even be an APP for the car to download to take advantage of certain functions. There is no single answer to this.
Without knowing the phone, OS, year and make of car no one can not tell you, for certain, that your even car allows for a media connection or how to get to it.
To state the very obvious:
You do have to turn on the audio device in the car
You will need to select it as a source often called MEDIA or PHONE
You will need to turn the volume on your phone all the way up and might have to increase the volume on your listening device.
This may sound condescending but some people think that because the phone works without the radio turned on they think the phone should play without it as well.

Open the glove compartment.
Remove the owners manual for your car from the glove compartment.
Read it.
