Universal Control frequently disconnects between M2 Mac Mini and M1 MacBook Pro

I have an M2 Mac Mini connected to an Apple 27" Studio Display and next to it (24") there is an M1 MacBook Pro 13" connected to an LG HDR 4K display. Both of the Macs are running MacOS Sonoma 14.3.1 at the time of this posting.

I am using an Apple wireless pro Magic Keyboard and a gen 2 Apple Magic wireless trackpad with Universal Control to operate both computers. This is especially helpful because it's difficult to reach the keyboard/mouse on the MacBook Pro while it is connected to my external monitor.

Ever since setting this up almost a year ago I have frequent (sometimes 20+ times a day) disconnects of Universal Control between the two computers. Occasionally (maybe 5% of the time) this is also accompanied by the Apple trackpad completely no longer responding. When this happens the mouse/cursor will jump back to the Mac Mini (primary) and no longer push through to the MacBook. After anywhere from 10-90 seconds it will automatically become reconnected and begin working normally again... for some period of time anyway.

Other times I've made it through a full day of working with only one or two disconnects.

Things I've tried to resolve the problem:

  1. Reboot and reset NVRAM on both computers.
  2. Running the keyboard and mouse with wired USB connections to the Mac instead of using them wirelessly.
  3. Eliminate possible sources of interference by disconnecting nearby devices, powering them off, etc.
  4. Set "reconnect automatically" under Settings->Displays->Advanced
  5. Disabling Firewall on both computers.

I'm really out of ideas at this point.

What more can be done to troubleshoot this problem?

The whole thing really seems to be exclusively a Bluetooth problem. I have now found a workaround that has been working for days without any disconnects between my MacMini M1 and MacBookPro M1 Pro under Sonoma 14.5.

If you want to reproduce it (do it for both Macs):

  • Reset Bluetooth controller with Terminal command:

sudo pkill bluetoothd;sudo shutdown -r now

Attention: Mac restarts immediately!

  • Activate Bluetooth sharing and pair both Macs once in the Bluetooth settings.

Fixed (for me)! Universal control should then work without any problems.

If so, Bluetooth sharing can probably be deactivated again (try it out!).

I hope this works for you too. I am grateful for any feedback!

Regards

Tom

Yeah, changing my WiFi setup out is not an option as it's a very expensive (multiple thousands of dollars) enterprise grade mesh and I'm not going to toss it because Universal Control doesn't work.

All of my devices on the WiFi (over 80) are working fine.

Guess I'll just have to buy a completely separate keyboard and mouse for the other setup.

It's pretty lame that Apple provides no tools for debugging this.

I have exactly the same issue. I have a usb keyboard and a bluetooth mouse. The mouse is connected fine. The Wifi is solid. The UC connection is fine...until it isn't. Sometimes it comes back in a minute or so, but frequently it will not come back at all unless I reset.

This is a software issue. Apple, please fix this. This is a major annoyance.

I hope someone at the Apple bug team does web search for, “Universal Control Disconnecting”.

This has been an issue for many many years which the team who handles bugs has completely failed to resolve. They need to focus on a fix for the stability. I don’t think they read anything here to discover bugs based off how long this has been an issue.

Does anyone know where you can contact the team that handles bugs directly? I can try to see if I have some internal connections at Apple to highlight how many years this issue has gone unresolved and unaddressed by the bug team through some of my business world connections but I’d rather go the regular route first and give that some time before escalating this to a high level.

This is the first temporary fix that was worked for me besides restarting entirely, thanks! (edit: it stopped working again 3 minutes later haha)

Have to say, I'm very disappointed as an apple customer by how much of their efforts are soley focused on creating new sales, rather than making good on the sales they made. I feel like I'm doing their job both discovering and resolving their bugs for them.

I have two MacBook Pro 14s (M1 and M2) that I use with an external screen. Universal Control works smoothly as long as the MacBook screens are open. However, when I close the screens, the connection drops within a minute. If I open the screens again, the connection is restored. I've had this issue for a year, and despite keeping my OS updated, there has been no fix yet.

Tom, thanks for sharing your experiences. I have an Apple M1 Max Mac Studio and a MacBook Pro M3 Max, and I have been suffering from persistent Universal disconnects. I tried your initial solution, and while it appeared to improve the situation, I still need to solve it. The problem varies so much throughout the day that it takes a statistical analysis to determine if there is an improvement.

Before I try the solution below, and if it does not work, then this one, I just wanted to check in to see if you have had any more considerations. Any feedback on the effectiveness, etc.?

Thanks for caring!

I just tried the same "half" fix and got my MacBook Pros paired via bluetooth sharing. They disconnected and I lost control within a couple minutes. This is hyper annoying and needs to be fixed properly.

I'll try the full fix later and report back.

Now I can't seem to get them to reconnect via bluetooth share at all from either machine (M1 Pro 17 & 14 on Sonoma 14.5 and same wifi network) Good times!

Bigwalton, its correct, that the MBPs are not (always) connected via Bluetooth Sharing. In my case, I have BS even completely deactivated, cause i don`t need it for other reasons.

I think, you must not be afraid that you will wreck the solution after restart :-)). Here the solution has survived several restarts as well as the update to Sonoma 14.6. yesterday.

As the OP I wanted to chime in that I've implemented the proposed solution to this problem that has been proposed by user Tom AdS ... I was very careful to go through all of the steps although my machines did not have the bluetooth plist file he identified.

After getting this done Universal Control seemed to work properly for a period of about three hours then it disconnected again, similar to what it has done before. The trackpad and keyboard snapped back to the primary Mac and after a period of about 15-30 seconds the Universal Control was automatically re-established.

It then failed a 2nd time literally 10 minutes later.

So in my case at least, this has not resolved the issue and I will have to continue awaiting a more robust solution from Apple.
