Macbook Pro 13" 2020 Battery Life

Hello,

I have a Macbook Pro 13" 2020 Battery Life 2.3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 that was functioning just fine until a few weeks ago when it stopped holding the charge (e.g., it will be 100% at 4 pm, I will leave it closed and next morning it will be out of battery).

I took it to a Mac Store and was told that the battery was at 81% depletion and that unfortunately Apple will only replace it for $250 if it's below 80%. However, when I check system setting the battery shows as "healthy". System settings shows the battery condition as normal with 393 cycles and full charge of 4534 mAh.

I've played with settings to reduce battery use to no avail.

Any thoughts on this?

Uninstall Sophos by following the developer's instructions. Anti-virus apps, cleaning/optimizer apps, and third party security software are not needed on a Mac and usually causes more problems than they solve since they interfere with the normal operation of macOS.

It'd be nice, if you'd open a new thread with what you are doing with the script. it'd be highly educating for all of us. 👌

I'll put it on my ToDo list. What I posted is about a quarter of it....probably like half when done & I remove code for testing & debugging since for my needs I want to monitor charging/drain status as well. I'm actually working on another User Tip at the moment for some common issues causing confusion for many users recently, but personal issues have prevented me from finishing it yet....I have a partial rough draft of it sitting for several weeks.

Hi chdsl,

You've developed a massive insight into this issue, and I hope you can get to some clarity through all your work that we can all benefit from. Thanks for sharing it here!

I'm a newcomer to Mac world, formerly from the Linux world. In that Linux world, I didn't really care about the battery health of the laptop, as it could be any laptop. Here, it is the device and the OS interconnected quite tightly, so got caught with battery health saga. I had to read a lot, ask a lot and watch the MBP a lot. Being from the Linux world, I'm quite happy with the Terminal. I'm quite lucky to get myself a used, but very good 2018 15" MBP. It actually won't allow me to think of getting a ARM chip MacBook. It works 10, 15 hours everyday. I had an eye operation recently, one eye yet, now I see the lovely colours in it. Wonder how it would look, when I have the other eye corrected!

My last ARM laptop was a Windows RT in 2010. It was a beauty, but it couldn't run all normal apps, and MS dropped it. Apple had done a revolution with M chips. I suppose, not all the apps (or scripts) written for Intel can run in them at the moment, but it'd change in time. Anyway, I'll buy an M chip MacBook one day as I want to experience it.👌

Run the third party app EtreCheck and post the report here so we can examine it for clues.

While the battery may be nearing the point where it needs replaced, it is also possible some third party software is causing a problem.

I've also seen cloud based services such as iCloud drain the battery overnight. You could try turning off the WiFi to see if that makes any difference overnight for the battery drain. You can also create a new macOS user account. Log out of the main user account, then log into the new macOS user account to see if you still get the same battery drain overnight....just do not sign into your AppleID or iCloud.

You can try booting the laptop into Safe Mode to see if the battery drains as quickly overnight. If this works, then most likely some third party software is at fault.

Most times the battery will just slowly get worse, but on occasion the failure could be more sudden. Of course a three year old battery is about when they start needing to be replaced and battery hardware failures begin to develop. No matter what, it won't be too long before you may need to have the Battery replaced.

FYI, from my calculations, your Battery is at either 88% or 89% of its original Design Capacity which the MacTracker app says is either 5,086 or 5,103 depending on the model. If that is the case, then you should have a few more years of use from this battery unless a cell goes bad.
