Att update as of 10:30est 2/22/24:

“The outages began at approximately 3:30 a.m. ET. The carrier has more than 240 million subscribers, the country's largest.

As Douglas Adams said, "Don't Panic".

There is a massive outage in the U.S. There is nothing you can do until the network issues are resolved.

Hello! Don’t worry this issue isn’t just happening to you as well, this is happening to everyone in the United States. If you have AT&T, Cricket, T-Mobile, Verizon and Smart Talk. You may have been affected by the outage. They are currently fixing the issue! Thank you for your patience. I heard some people have gotten back their service so hopefully you’ll get yours sooner or later. It may come back around 6 pm

Friday 2/23 my phone is still in SOS. Am I only one left not reconnected?

My understanding is the service has been restored. But, I imagine it's possible that there are still a few areas where it hasn't been.

You may also want to try resetting your network settings. Settings>General>Transfer & Reset iPhone>Reset>Reset Network Settings. You'll lose saved WiFi passwords but nothing else.

My phone was working perfectly today until I did the last OS update this morning and now I can’t call anybody, nobody can call me, and I can only text other iPhone users who are in Wi-Fi mode. I have a job that requires me to be on calland deal with a very very fragile population of people. This is completely unacceptable.

There is a massive outage in the U.S. When you updated your phone, it was temporarily disconnected from the network when it turned off and back on. The problem seems to be related to establishing a connection. There is nothing you can do until the network issues are resolved. It's not Apple's fault. It has nothing to do with the update. It's even happening to people with Android phones!
