Mail is slow to load message content

Mail (version 16) is very slow to load the content/text. The headline appears ok, click on it and all I see is the headline with an unpopulated page. If I ask mail to forward the message all of it appears immediately in a new message to send on - Of course in this condition I am unable to click on links included in the mail. It is not any specific mail, ie Aol, Gmail, Outlook it affects all incoming mail. I am running Mail 16 on Monterey 12.7.3 late 2015 Imac 27.

ps - Once it has loaded it is immediately visible if I go back into it.

How much Free space o your Hard Drive?

Start with this if IntelMac...

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes or more.

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

If you have no POP accounts & they’re all IMAP accounts then in Mail’s Mailbox menu choose Rebuild.
